True Democracy Is But A Sweet Dream

Politics everywhere is dirty and profit-oriented. Money spent in buying or securing votes will be reimbursed once politicians gain power and hold important office. This is so true in underdeveloped countries.

Thailand will never be truly democratic like the US, the UK, most of Europe, Australia, Japan, or even Korea but will rank proudly with the Philippines and Indonesia. The reason is the quality of the Thai people.

The lack of people's education and knowledge endangers their ability to differentiate good leaders from bad ones.

Their daily struggles are far greater problems to care about the world. Focussing on daily survival, they are easily duped by sweet promises of political candidates. And then, they never know that those promises are nothing but empty ones. Once these crooks are in power, they will never fervently improve the educational system. Why will they want people to be better educated and smarter? Smart people can't be controlled or bought. For the wicked and evil political system to survive, it is essential that people remain stupid and ignorant. Feeding them garbage through TV programs: soap operas, game shows, and talk shows, and keeping people deeply indulged in materialism and wrong values surely help the crooks succeed so far.

Rare are politicians whose sole purpose is to serve, to right the wrongs, and to help make the society better. Good and educated people shy away from politics because they will usually end up losing more than just energy and intention; they could lose their reputation. They are not mentally well equipped to deal with mafia bosses, thugs, or the power of dirty money. Here, light is defeated by dark forces. Many people think politics is not worth their lives, their ideals, or their toils and sacrifices.

I accept the fact that Thailand is plainly underdeveloped. Most people are still in self-denial and are fooling themselves by using the word "developing." Most Thais are ignorant of their surroundings. Media are not helpful either. Most Thais still view neighboring countries as "underdeveloped" and lag behind Thailand. The fact is Vietnam and Laos are on their way to surpassing us economically and socially has never been emphasized to wake the Thais up.

Corruption, bribery, and abuse of power are a way of life in Thailand. Corrupt politicians are never punished but instead are respected by the society. Thailand is the land that only money and power speak. Faithful and uncorrupt officials are branded "idiots" and never prosperous in their work. Those who help sending solicited money up to top management get promotion nearly every year. There are many good examples: Police forces, the IRS, Customs Dept, the Land Transport Dept, and many more.

I remember reading about a WalMart heiress who was arrested for DWI. Despite her family reputation, wealth, and influence, she and her crime were punished by law. The American police did not bow down to one of the richest people in the country. A similar incidence will never happen in Thailand, ever.
